How It Started
In 2010, the Garrett Family came together with a shared vision—to create something meaningful that would honor their legacy and continue long after them. Through reflection, they recognized that who we become is shaped by where we come from and what is instilled in us. At the heart of every strong family are strong roots.
Having been blessed with a solid foundation, the family felt called to honor those who work tirelessly to build and sustain families. From this vision, the Garrett Legacy Foundation was established, creating annual awards to recognize outstanding parents, including the Married Mother of the Year, Single Mother of the Year, and Father of the Year.
The family chose to begin by honoring their grandmothers, Lizzie Bell Craigs and Dolores Evelyn Perkins, whose lives embodied strength, sacrifice, and devotion.
Although the family never had the opportunity to meet Grandma Lizzie, they know she was an incredible mother to her seven children. She was described as strong, loving, and deeply involved in her children’s lives—a devoted wife who lived out the principles of Proverbs 31. Her life centered around her family, just as she desired.
Dolores Perkins, lovingly known as Nana, demonstrated strength in a different but equally powerful way. As a single mother, she made a daily decision to place her son above all else. She never married or had other children, choosing instead to pour everything she had into raising one. She was not only a mother, but also a trusted confidant—offering honesty, accountability, and unwavering support.
To honor their grandmothers, the family established awards recognizing both a married mother and a single mother who exemplify these same qualities of love, sacrifice, and dedication.
A few years later, the Father of the Year Award was introduced, recognizing the vital role fathers play in the family structure. This award was inspired in part by their grandfather, Samuel Craig Sr., a man known for his strength, sacrifice, and provision. As a young man, he worked tirelessly in cotton fields to help support his family, ensuring they had opportunities for a better life. He led by example, guiding his children and loving his family with unwavering commitment.
Over time, the meaning of the fatherhood award deepened. It initially recognized men who became exceptional fathers despite growing up without one. However, the family later chose to center this recognition around their own father, Rick Garrett Sr. Though he had only two biological children, he embraced and raised all of the children in the family as his own. His love, discipline, and dedication were unwavering and equal for all—never defined by biology, but by commitment.
Today, the awards honor fathers who choose to step into the role wholeheartedly—men who, like Rick Garrett Sr., lead with love, responsibility, and intention.
These awards remain deeply personal to the Garrett Family. Each year, members of the community are invited to nominate mothers and fathers who reflect the values, strength, and character of those who came before them. Selected recipients are honored with both recognition and a monetary gift.
In partnership with the Girls and Boys of Destiny Foundation, the annual Fashion Extravaganza serves as a primary fundraising event to support these awards. Through the vision and leadership of Ms. Electa Randolph, along with her daughters TaMara and Kim, the event brings the community together in celebration and purpose. Proceeds from ticket sales and community support help make it possible to continue honoring deserving parents year after year.

Shayla is the second oldest. Though quiet and reserved, she carries a calm confidence that helps ground and support the family.
